Ruhiira is located in the mountainous Isingiro District in southwest Uganda. The area is surrounded by hills and valleys, with 75% of the local population living on hilly land. According to a survey conducted in 2007, more than 50% of the children living in the district were suffering from chronic malnutrition, caused primarily by insufficient nutrition from local crops, spread of parasitic worms, poor hygiene, and unclean water. To address these problems, the TFT school lunch program was implemented in 2008.
Currently, TABLE FOR TWO – in partnership with the local community – provides funding for school meals for more than 11,000 students and 256 teachers in 21 elementary and middle schools in the area. Posho (maize flour boiled to a dough-like consistency) is served for lunch along with beans, green leafy vegetables, and oil fortified with vitamin A. A break-time serving of porridge is also provided five days a week.
