South Africa has the largest economy on the African continent. It is also known for its past policy of apartheid. Although universal elections held in 1994 officially brought the policy to an end, its legacy remains. Vast disparities in wealth, education, and employment are still prevalent between the black Africans and the minority whites. In addition, nearly 18% of the adult population currently live with HIV/AIDS.

Orange Farm, South Africa

Orange Farm lies roughly 70km south of the capital of Pretoria, on the outskirts of Johannesburg.  TABLE FOR TWO began supporting the school gardening program here in July 2010.

Currently, the South African government distributes corn to all primary schools in the country.  TFT’s school gardening program produces cabbage, spinach, carrots, onions, and other vegetables to provide a more nutritionally-balanced school meal.

In addition to providing the tools and seeds necessary for the gardens, a training program on gardening techniques and nutrition is conducted for the teachers and students.  The programs and techniques introduced at Orange Farm have since spread to other schools and households.
