Ethiopia is the second most populous nation in Africa and the largest landlocked country in the world, bordering Eritrea to the north, Sudan to the west, Djibouti and Somalia to the east, and Kenya to the south. Its terrain is diverse, with deserts in the east and tropical forests in the south. Ethiopia is the largest coffee and honey producing nation in Africa.

TFT staff on their site visit to Koraro
Koraro, Ethiopia

TFT supports the school meal program in Koraro, located in the Hawzen district in northern Ethiopia near the border with Eritrea.  It is extremely remote, located 16km from the nearest dry weather road and 54km from the main road.  The region is semiarid and is one of the poorest areas in all of Ethiopia.

In 2008 Ethiopia suffered from a severe drought, with agricultural output dropping by 80% in some areas.  As a result, the school meals program was temporarily put on hold starting in the 2009 school year.

TFT’s involvement commenced in September of 2010, in collaboration with the World Food Programme.  TFT currently supports 14,477 students at 22 schools, providing two oranges per week to supplement the nutrition from the school meals.
