For the second time this spring, TABLE FOR TWO USA will be partnering with TEDx. On May 6th, TFT meals will be served to participants at TEDxSDSU (San Diego State University)!

On April 14th, Nobu – TFT USA’s DC Chapter Head – will run his first 50-mile race.  It’s a personal challenge, but also our first “RUN FOR TWO” event, with the calories he burns translating into school meals in sub-Saharan Africa!

Veggie Grill – the caterer for TEDxUCIrvine – will be providing a delicious TABLE FOR TWO lunch for the event.  As usual, the meal is healthy and 25 cents per meal will be donated to provide one school meal in Uganda, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Kenya, or South Africa.

TFT USA Co-President Fumi Tosu will be one of the speakers at the William & Mary Active Citizens Conference on February 17th/18th.  The conference will explore ways in which we can support a culture of active citizenship on college campuses.

Co-President Fumi Tosu and San Diego Chapter Head Mayumi Uejima-Carr will represent TFT USA at the annual Ashoka U Exchange, which will be held at Arizona State University.  Ashoka U, the university arm of Ashoka, hosts an annual conference to connect higher education leaders with social entrepreneurs and to “embolden our vision for higher education as a world changing experience and to provide the cutting edge collaboration opportunities and new insights to catalyze this transformation of higher education.”

More than 500 participants – administrators, faculty, staff and students – from over 100 leading institutions, as well as social entrepreneurs and leaders representing corporate, non-profit, and philanthropic organizations, are expected to attend.

Following the Bonenkai (year end party), TFT’s DC chapter will kick off the new year by participating in the Japan Commerce Association’s New Year Festival with TFT partnering restaurants.

This year’s festival features Shishi-mai (lion dance), Taiko (Japanese drums), Japanese choirs, games, food, and lots more!

The Japan Society of Northern California will host a panel of experts from Japan, exploring the social entrepreneur movement in Japan, after almost one year since the earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear disaster.  Panelists include:

• Keio University and Social Venture Partners Japan social entrepreneurism evangelist Hideyuki Inoue
• Entrepreneurial Training for Innovative Communities (ETIC)’s Tohoku leadership project expert Yoshiaki Ishikawa

This month, the TFT DC chapter will host its annual end-of-the-year party in appreciation of our partner restaurants, members and supporters who have worked together with us this year.  This is based on the Japanese tradition of showing appreciation to affiliates by having a party at the end of the year.

But wait – there’s more!

We’re also using this as an opportunity to learn how we can improve, so if you’ve dined at a TFT restaurant, tried a TFT menu item or been to one of our events, we’d love to hear what you think!  This is your chance to give us your feedback and socialize with other DC chapter members.  After the discussion we will enjoy Japanese cuisine from TFT partner Yosaku Japanese restaurant’s special year-end party menu.

The Asian Development Bank’s headquarters in the Philippines will participate in the TABLE FOR TWO World Food Day celebrations with an event on October 17th (Mon)!  They will develop and serve a special TABLE FOR TWO menu item in their cafeteria, with a portion of the proceeds donated to TFT’s recipient sites.

Although the event is in a separate location and at a different time, that’s what TFT is all about.  We have one more participant at our table on World Food Day.

TABLE FOR TWO supporters from around the world will gather on October 14th (Fri) to celebrate World Food Day in a collaborative and interactive event.  At 10:15pm, we will connect – live live video feed – sites in New York, Washington D.C., San Francisco and Tokyo, saying “Itadakimasu!” (or “Bon Appetit” in Japanese) in unison while we enjoy and appreciate the food and drinks we’ll be having.

On October 14th (12-2pm), TFT supporters at George Mason University will host a panel discussion entitled “Imbalance in Food Distribution: Obesity and Malnutrition in the World.”  The panel will feature experts on issues on both sides of the “table.”  Dr. Pawloski is an expert on childhood obesity, while Dr. Gewa’s research focuses on nutrition and public health among populations in developing countries.

TABLE FOR TWO Bentos (lunch boxes) will be catered for the event by Maneki Neko, a TFT participating restaurant.

TABLE FOR TWO invites you to learn how to make the perfect sushi from Sushi Chef Takazato “Tao” of Maneki Neko.  With years of experience, Tao-san will teach you the secrets of making some of the delectable sushi rolls on the menu.

A series of TFT-related events will be held at George Mason University over the coming weeks.  First is an information session that will be held on September 27th (Tues) from 6-7pm at SUB I Rm. 3332 at GMU.  There will be a presentation on TFT’s unique model, followed by a quiz (with prizes!).

TFT’s Cincinnati chapter, led by Asuka Yamaki, is holding a small, private food tasting event on September 25th.  The TFT team is collaborating with Parmaganic, a local non-profit organization that grows many kinds of vegetables in their eco-garden.  They will be bringing fresh veggies harvested that morning to create the following healthy food items:
